Just to wet your whistle...

September 15, 2010 4:55 pm · Posted by oldergirlbeauty

Hi guys! I am back & trying to catch up and look back on everything that happened this last week. I just wanted to let you guys know that I a starting to upload some of my backstage videos to my YouTube page, if you want to get a look at what I was seeing before I post about them.

I had a chance to do and see so many things - I can't wait to tell you about it all! :)

MAC "Warm and Cozy" video review

January 18, 2010 3:55 pm · Posted by oldergirlbeauty

MAC has come out with a collection called "Warm and Cozy", which is just what its name implies - warm toned products. This is a larger collection with items from color cosmetics, that are primarily neutral nudes that fall on the warm end of the spectrum, to body products.

I had a chance to try out several products from this line, but my favorite of it had to be the Care Blends Essential Oils, Grapefruit & Chamomile, if only for the aromatherapy qualities alone. (*The fact that it soaked in and applied like a dry oil immeditately didn't hurt anything, either.)

As with most MAC collections, this one is Limited Edition. It's on counters now thru February, with the International release in February. Let me know if you pick any of this up & what you liked the most.

MAC in Lillyland video review

January 11, 2010 4:45 pm · Posted by oldergirlbeauty

MAC collaborated with NYC socialite/designer Lilly Pulitzer for their collection called "MAC in Lillyland". In it they included some of the floral colors & patterns similar to what Lilly used in her famous Shift Dress from the 50's.
This Limited Edition collection is available now thru February, 2010 in the US, with an International release in February, 2010.

Zombified

October 31, 2009 10:05 pm · Posted by oldergirlbeauty

Okay, I think I have made it clear that I may not have the best skills when it comes to makeup application or hair styling. However, it appears that I *can* put out a good zombie (*with help from a little tutorial, of course).

Nate decided that this year he wanted to be a zombie, I figured, "Surely, I can do that" and off we went to get supplies. We went to the local Goodwill and picked up a shirt, t-shirt and tie for $4.85. Score! Then went to Walmart and got a little $1.99 Halloween makeup kit & $1.99 white hairspray. Lastly, we went to a Halloween superstore & got fake blood and "Bloody Scab" for $6 - Total $15ish. Not too bad, considering how much some of those prepackaged costumes cost nowadays. *cough*$40*cough*

So, after negotiating that he could go trick or treating with his friends without me, I could take pictures of his transformation, we were ready to start playing.

My fresh faced kiddo pre-zombification.

After we sponged him white, I set it with some Three Custom Translucent Loose Powder so it wouldn't melt away. It pained me, but, dang I couldn't find anything else to use. He *so* didn't appreciate my sacrifice.

I tapped on some black cream to give him the hollowed out eyes look. He even directed me at one point, "You need more over here".

While his "scabs" were drying on his face, we went outside and sprayed his tousled, gelled hair white. Looking at himself, he said, "I look like the guy on "America's Next Top Model, only with darker eyes". Oh, please, Jay Manuel only *wishes* he looks as good as Nate. (*Biased, table of 1).

After blackening the scabs a bit, we added on the fake blood and let it drip drip down.

After he put on his outfit and we dripped it with blood, too, he was ready to go out into the night begging for sweet treats.

Overall, I was pretty please with what I pulled off, but the real prize is the fact that Nate declared it "Awesome!" and he had a great night. It can't get much better than that. :)

Grate your shadow as you go

October 12, 2009 12:35 pm · Posted by oldergirlbeauty

I just saw a new Smashbox product for pre-order on QVC that looks kinda interesting.

Actually, it looks like what would be spawned if Smashbox's Halo Hydrating Perfecting Powder and the Reign Collection Eyeshadow Palette had babies. It is a shaver delivery system for a base color and a contour color, with a protective seal to prevent the shadows from mixing - the Halo Eyeshadow Hydrating Eye Shadow (w/ Brushes 3 & 10).

They say, "A hydrating eye shadow with effective anti-aging benefits. The formula contains hydrogel technology, which helps retain moisture in the skin." I can't say anything, as I haven't tried this, but I am intrigued by the whole "shave what you need" aspect. It's supposed to give you more of the lighter color for your lid and less for the darker crease color.  In addition, they are throwing in the two brushes you need for this affect for less than $40 (man, don't I sound just like Lisa Robertson? Oh wait, she always says "For less than $1 a day". Ha!)

This is currently on QVC's site as Item #A92257, available for pre-order, as Advance Orders ship October 20th. It comes in 4 color combos and includes 2 brushes for $39.54 (plus shipping.)

Let me know if you try this out for yourself.

Backstage at Christian Siriano Spring/Summer 2010

September 27, 2009 6:06 pm · Posted by oldergirlbeauty

I was lucky enough to be backstage for the Christian Siriano Spring/Summer 2010 show. (*yes, this is the show that I accessed backstage via the front of house. Go me!). The hair team from Aveda was led by Antoinette Beenders and the makeup team as led by Polly Osmond for Victoria's Secrety Beauty, with whom Christian did a makeup collection earlier this year.

Antoinette was pretty focused on the hair, so she didn't really speak with people much to describe what she was up to, but I was able to snag a few minutes with Polly, who explained the gloss on the eyelids the models were rocking.

Backstage at Ports 1961 Spring/Summer 2010 show

I was lucky enough to get to go backstage and see the hair and makeup being done for the Ports 1961 Spring/Summer 2010 show. This was my actual *first* backstage fashion show. Yep, had no idea what I was doing, but got much more comfortable as the shows went on.

Below, you will see a vid of MAC Makeup Artist, Romero Jennings, discussing the look for the show:

And below are vids from the hairstylists for the show, Pearson Knight and Isabelle Lepage, discuss the hair inspiration and execution for the show:
