You make me feel like a natural woman...

March 24, 2009 8:36 am · Posted by oldergirlbeauty
Recently, I attended a webinar (seminar on the web) by Natural Instincts to introduce us to some of their new lines of haircolor. I gotta admit - I had never used this brand before as I was of a mind that all box hair color was the same (save for new advances in haircolor like the the quick-coloring Clairol Perfect 10). This talk was informative and proved me wrong, showing me several of the differences.

I got a chance to try a box from the Golden Shimmer line in Golden Mahogany. First off, I misunderstood how to apply it, which is one big difference from other box colors to me. You are to apply this to damp, NOT dry hair - like I usually do. In the webinar they said, "Apply this to clean, damp hair", which I heard as "Freshly shampoo'd, before you dry it hair". IT'S NOT! It should be on clean, second day, product free hair. I didn't see this pretty important fact until almost the bottom of the first page of the application instructions (*pdf). This kind of peeved me, since I had set aside that specific time to color my hair. *sigh* Anyway, I did manage to color my hair that weekend. Here are my beautiful part roots (you guys are getting to be BFF's now, since you've seen each other so much):
And this is what my pretty glowy hair afterwards (I tried to take it in the same
conditions as my not so pretty roots):
Aside from applying to damp hair, everything else was pretty much the same application as any other home hair color. The smell wasn't bad - I am going to attribute this to the fact that there is NO ammonia in this color. In addition, there are antioxidents, plus Vitamins C & E, in there with the intent of making your hair healthier than before you colored it. It also comes with a 6wk tube of once a week "Color Treat" conditioner which, I gotta say, made my hair feel very silk afterwards. I let my hair air dry and it wasn't near as flyaway as I would have expected after a coloring.

All that said, I really liked the results (Hell, I got 2 compliments on my color out at the sunny ballfield the next day - who wouldn't like that??). And, since it washes out in 28 shampoos (it's a demi-permanent color), I would definitely recommend this to someone wanting a boost, or to cover grays, without worrying too much about commitment.

Lancôme's in the house...

March 17, 2009 4:32 pm · Posted by oldergirlbeauty
Fun news. Lancôme has branched out on the web and started The Lancôme Blog. The blog will be written by Kerry Diamond, our vice president for public relations and a former beauty editor herself, and the other P.R. team members will be pitching in from time to time (and you lovelies know what a fan of Kerry's I am). The blog will cover all the buzz about the brand, from their hottest products, to news about their spokespeople and makeup artists, to what the beauty editors and bloggers are saying about them.

And there will be Giveaways - with a capital G. To start things off, they are giving away 10 bottles of their new skincare product, Génifique. All you have to do is comment on this post letting them what you think of the blog or any ideas for future posts/what you would like to see. That's it. Easy peasy.

Oh, and if you are on twitter, (and really, why aren't you by now?), they are on there as lancomeparis if you would like to follow them on there, too.

Under the boardwalk...down by the sea....

March 16, 2009 1:31 pm · Posted by oldergirlbeauty
So, I started on a project. I call it the "Oh gawd my heels are so cracked that they hurt to walk on them. Oh gawd, the pain. Please make it stop. I'll do anything. Just stop the pain. Oh gawd...please." project. Or, the OGMHASCTTHTWOTOGTPPMISIDAJSTPOGP project for short. Okay, maybe not so much.

But, really, I have such badly cracked heels they hurt. Now, I use my Pedegg to scrape it down, and get the occasional pedicure - but all of that is on the surface and not really fixing anything. I need a true fix.

Thanks to Twitter I met Emily from C'watre (pronounced "seawater") Oceanic Skin Care. She thinks she might have a solution to my problem - Kanreki Cream. The main ingredient is oceanwater and contains the minerals that should help heal my heels. (She also sent me some other goodies that I will be trying, but they are not part of the OGMAHAS...aw forget it... project.)

So, lovelies, I am going to give it a shot. I mean, really, look at this heel.

Would you really want to go into sandal season with that?!? I don't.

I will def keep you posted on how it's working out.

You look maaaahhhhvalous

(yes, I know a lot of you are too young for this reference - Ha!)

As I was watching GMA Weekend this morning, I saw them highlight something that I think is SO. IMPORTANT. (And I'm actually serious!). They showed the story of two college guys who hand out compliments (warning: video) on their college campus every Wednesday. They do it as a way to boost morale in people during these tough times, and I applaud their spirit. I am a firm believer is giving out compliments, as I think they can make someone feel better, doesn't cost a dime to do it and has such a positive ripple effect.

I think a smile is a beautiful thing - it can light up a room, and a compliment can make that happen, if it's actually TAKEN. I think it is such a shame that most of the time when a compliment is given, esp to a woman, it is usually followed up with something along the lines of "Yeah, but (something negative about themselves)" or "Oh, this old thing? I've had it (forever, it doesn't really fit, etc.)". All of that basically negates what was complimented and makes the complimenter feel like a big dummy for thinking they noticed something good. That's stupid. Sorry. We need to learn how to TAKE A COMPLIMENT.

I know it's hard, because our knee jerk reaction is to temper the compliment so we don't appear to cocky. Forget that! Take it and rock it. Someone took the time to notice the fact that you made that extra effort in some way, so appreciate that someone noticed! I have a gorg coworker who might not have the best self-esteem and would always dismiss my compliments. Well, I got sick of that, so I told her that when I complimented her that she had to say "Thank you" and walk away. I would take nothing else. Well, the joke is now she says "Thank you and walk away", but she now says it with a smile and accepts the compliment. You can say I wore her down, but I know that I have changed just a little bit in how she carries herself - which not only affects her, but makes me happy, too. See how that whole ripple effect works? :)

Seriously, I know there isn't any of us that doesn't like to get those warm fuzzies, even if we do automatically want to dismiss it. But, while we work on accepting our own compliments, we can make it a habit to give them out to others. Does it really! take much effort to say something nice to someone? Not really - it just take practice, and you know what your mom would always tell you, "Practice makes perfect - or at least pretty damn good".

"The Earth is what we all have in common."

March 12, 2009 12:28 pm · Posted by oldergirlbeauty
Hey, lovelies - did you take advantage of the Josie Maran sale I talked about last month? I hope so, because then you would already know what I have learned. Her stuff is fabulous! Like, use daily, great. I was able to try her eyeshadow in "Parfait" (a matte soft pink), and it has become a staple to me. I use it as a base for pretty much all my neutral looks, and it just feels good going on. I was also able to try her "Plumping Lip Gloss in "Strength". Now, the only quibble I have about this is that I didn't feel any plumping action, but, damn, that didn't matter to me when I put this taupey, shimmer color on. Gorgeous color and damn if it didn't taste great, too. (Come on, you KNOW how lip products taste affects your usage of them - it does for me.) Like, I wanna lick it off as soon as I put it on, good. Okay, maybe that's why I didn't see any plumping action - I'm not gonna lie.

Anyway, if for some reason you didn't get anything then, you really have no excuse to pass up her "Earth Day Kit" at Sephora ($48).

This set contains:
- 100% Organic Argan Oil (3-5 uses)
- 0.14oz Plumping Lip Gloss in Daring (sheer shimmering rosy nude)
- 0.12oz Cream Blush in Sunrise (soft pink)
- 0.17oz Mascara in Black
- 0.04 oz Eye Liner in Black

As you can see, this kit has universally flattering colors and since the products contain natural, paraben- and fragrance-free ingredients this would be a great kit to get to know Josie's line of products. The products come in a box made from recycled materials and printed with fun green tips from Josie herself. So, not only are you doing good to yourself with healthy products, you are helping the environment, too. Not a thing wrong with that, right?

Not quite a Barbie girl

March 9, 2009 10:46 am · Posted by oldergirlbeauty
Today is Barbie's 50th birthday!

I was never a big Barbie girl, let alone a big doll girl at all growing up (remind me to tell you the story of my mom nailing dolls to my wall on display - I think I have a pic of it somewhere, btw). However, how do you ignore the birthday of an icon? You really can't, esp since anywhere you look lately you see it hyped - from a runway show at Fashion Week, to a collaboration with Stila cosmetics for a retro Barbie makeup collection of tins. So I decided to celebrate just a tiny bit. I changed my fingernail polish:

I put on Zoya Nail Polish in Barbie. It truly is a Barbie color pink - very bubblegum with a hint of frost. I was lucky enough to pick this up during a twitter only special, and decided this would be a great day to try this one out. I like it, but I think it will make a much better toe color for me this Spring, as I am not used to such pastel colors on my fingers now.
