The Magnifique Box (+ a Giveaway!!)

May 27, 2009 12:53 pm · Posted by oldergirlbeauty
During my trip to NYC, I was so lucky to have some of the nicest weather imaginable. It made for strolling along the streets at night so much better. Saturday night, we were wandering around the Lower East Side, we passed by "The Box" nightclub. Now, I may have been rocking my Dolce & Gabbana smokey eye, but I sure was not dressed to go into the nightclub - as much as I would have loved to (I adore old style vaudville/burlesque times). So, the closest I have come to seeing the inside of it is thru the commercial that the lovely Anne Hathaway recently did for Lancôme's new fragrance, "Magnifique".
Anne shot the video in March, after working with a choreographer for a week prior. There were 100 extras and she was styled by Rachel Zoe for the shoot. You can see the video on the Lancôme's blog, where you can also read about Kerry Diamond's thoughts from the shoot that day. (*If you go directly to the "Magnifique" page you can see a second version of Anne's commercial, but it doesn't have near the fancy footwork as the first one.)

And, as a treat for all my reader Lovelies, I get the chance to give away one (1) bottle of this fragrance, because I missed you guys so much while I was gone. I'll start the giveaway today, and let it go until Midnight(cst) next Wednesday, June 3rd. I will announce the winner on Thursday, June 4th. I'll even make it super simple for you - just enter your name and email addy in the box below. That's it. Easy peasy.

Pat McGrath for Dolce & Gabbana

May 22, 2009 6:33 pm · Posted by oldergirlbeauty
Let's just get this out of the way right up front. I met Pat McGrath last weekend at Saks 5th Ave. See?
She was at Saks to promote the launch of Dolce & Gabbana's makeup line, in which she was a creative force, in collaboration with the designers, to bring the color line to fruition. (*I'm just putting it out there - I didn't know who she was until I took a crash course in Pat McGrathology after hearing the chorus of voices on twitter telling me I should know who she is NOW!) Now, Ms. McGrath wasn't putting brush to face that day, her team was, but she was going around to the stations to offer suggestions on what would work the best for each lovely. As for myself, she came by to say "Goodbye" as she was heading to catch a plane back to London. I was lucky enough to get a hand-hold, hug and a photo op. This happened mid-makeup application, so only one side of my face is done, but a girl's gotta take her opportunities as they come, ya know?

The MUA who played around with makeup on me that day was the lovely, Nicole Williams, who some of you might recognize from Fox/Style Network (reruns) of "Ambush Makeover".

She was a blast to chat with and we even had some fun and made some videos of her makeup applications. The first one is her showing how to do a gradiant smokey eye on me (vid). (*Seriously, check out those rockin' brows. LOL)

The second one is Nicole showing how to use the Green from the "Dazzling" eyeshadow duo wet, as an eyeliner on me (vid).

Oh, one of the things that I learned while chit chatting was the fact that the "supposed" reason that D&G didn't have their brushes out for sale yet was because they can't decided on the logo on the brushes. It's not that they aren't ready, it's just that they don't know how they want to put the shiny name on. Love for that to my only issue in life, right?

As for my opinion on the line, well, I do think it was overpriced for what it is ($36 for the duo), and the color pay-off isn't as deep/rich as I expected. I like the packaging, but mostly for the glam factor, not for practical purposes. But, really, isn't that why you would get any of this line in the first place?

The Makeup Show - Blogger Preview

May 22, 2009 8:31 am · Posted by oldergirlbeauty
On Saturday, May 16th, I was one of a lucky couple dozen beauty bloggers invited to a preview of The Makeup Show, a makeup trade show of some of the most influential cosmetic companies to date, put on by The Powder Group. We were greeted with wine, cheese, crackers and fruit for a bit of snack and an informal meet and greet. (Which I apparently sucked at since I didn't meet Miss Dina from eye4style until I was leaving and she came up to me. Ha!)

Once we were all gathered, The Powder Group founder Michael DeVellis welcomed us and told us just how important and vital that us, as beauty bloggers, are to promotion nowadays. You could really tell by his enthusiasm and sincerity that he truly believes that we are the way of things to come in how information is put out there - esp since we have a passion for product and not just the freebies.

He then handed us over to the fabulous makeup artist, James Vincent. His work has been everywhere - and don't even get him started on American Idol or ANTM, please. He was a great tour guide thru the aisles, as he had something generous to say about each of the vendors and gave us his recommendations for his secret weapons from each one that he carries in his kit. (*Funny story - he knows a local makeup line - t.a.l.k. beauty, that was started by 4 friends in Oklahoma City, who work/spend time around a local beauty store called The Makeup Bar, where I have been known to drop a penny or two. James knows Alex over there, was curious if she was coming to the show. Well, I have @themakeupbar on twitter and sent her a message for him. Teeny tiny world we live in, eh?)

I'll just show a few of the vendors we got to see this day, with a few pics for now, as I will go a bit more in depth on a few of them when I post about what I saw the actual day of the show.

We were also introduced to Emmy Award winning makeup artist, Kevin Bennett, who is the Director of Artist Relations for Make Up For Ever. MUFE is celebrating their 25th Anniversary and Kevin was there to debut their new HD concealer. (*Remind me to tell you how we *really* met - LOL)

There were also two other great companies represented at the show - Stila Cosmetics and Smashbox Cosmetics. At the Stila booth, was VP of Global Sales, Artistry & International Marketing, Desiree Tordecilla, who was kind enough to clear up a little bit about the Stila closure in March and present us the Stila Summer '09 24K Gold Collection:
I have so much more to say about Desi and Stila, but I will save it for my Stila specific post.

And, at the Smashbox booth was the fab Ms. Lori Taylor, Professional Artistry Relations Manager. She was so great and knowledgeable about what works, she was just a joy to talk to.
She gave a presentation at the show on needed basics, and wore some *fierce* shoes - I'll have to show you that, too.

These lovely ladies were sweet enough to stop and take a picture with me, as I had to leave the preview early:
Seriously, just how freakin' awesome was that? Thank you so much, ladies!

And, since I had to leave early, I didn't get to meet everyone at the preview, but I def made up for it when I attended the actual show the next day. I want to take a second and thank everyone at The Powder Group for a really enjoyable afternoon. I really liked getting a "Behind the Scenes" peek at the show.

Brows by Elke Von Freudenberg

May 21, 2009 1:24 pm · Posted by oldergirlbeauty
One of the things I def wanted to do in NYC was to go see the fab "Eyebrow Specialist" Elke Von Fruedenberg. I had been trying to coordinate my trips with her bi-coastal schedule and was lucky enough to get an appointment for this trip on Saturday morning. So, before I went, I took a "before" pic of my brows:
Little messy, but I like a fuller brow, so, that's what she got to work with.

And this is how great they looked afterwards: She told me that I had great shape, that my arch was in the right place, but that she wanted to just "sharpen them up a bit". I was all for it and I think the results are great. (*the makeup is after my appt at Saks for the D&G Makeup launch - def more about that later.)

And here I am with the lovely lady herself: She was super generous with her time - even after my epic address FAIL! She does brows a neat way - she put on her super magnifying reader glasses and has you *sit up* in front of her, not laying down. She says this way she sees how your face falls naturally and can better shape your brows to fit your face this way. The didn't use any wax or threading on me. Just pluck plucked me neat with her tweezers. (*Neat tidbit - when I asked her who her most famous person she had met - get this - Oprah! Yep. She was doing the makeup for one of O's friends, and next thing you know O walks in. Crazy world, eh?). I didn't have any leftover redness, like after waxing, so I was able to keep on trucking on with my day.

Oh, in addition to doing brows all over the place, Elke also has a brow product line called Elke: The Brow Collection that has all kinds of brow shadows, brow pencils, and her "Clear Eyebrow Ware", which acts like a brow gel, but without the crunchy/flaking. She also let me in on what she has upcoming - which will be amazing for lovelies trying to grow their brows out - but I won't spill any more than that - I'll let her share when she is ready.

Like I said, she is bi-coastal, but take a look at her calendar and schedule an appointment when she is on your coast. You won't be sorry.

So, what did *you* do this week?

May 21, 2009 9:22 am · Posted by oldergirlbeauty
Hello, Lovelies!

I am back to the usual grind in OKC now, as I have just gotten back from a fabulous trip to this little hidden gem of a town on the east coast, New York City. Maybe you have heard of it?

I'm going to start posting up my adventures, in the chronological order that I did them. (*if you follow my twitter stream you know when/what I was doing, but this will def give more details to that. I'm also going to be posting pics and videos to my Facebook page, that I don't post up here, so take a gander over there, too.

I also want to give a big THANK YOU! and HI! to all the lovely people I had a chance to meet on my trip - it def made it worthwhile.

Broadway bound....or at least that general area

May 15, 2009 10:14 pm · Posted by oldergirlbeauty
Hiya Lovelies!

I may have mentioned this, but I will again, in case you didn't know - I'm going to NYC this weekend. Heck, as I type this, I am enjoying a beautiful NYC night thru the windows. (Making my 2hr delay on the Dallas runway due to "weather conditions at LGA" even more suspect. *sigh*)

Annnnyway - I am so excited to be here and to do all of the great things I have lined up. Like, getting my brows done by Eyebrow Specialist Elke Von Freudenberg, a facial at Mario Badescu, a custom bra fitting by Linda the Bra Lady, attending The Makeup Show and getting my makeup done (and checking out the new dolce & gabbana makeup) by a little known artist named Pat McGrath - I am hoping she does a fine job. ;)

In addition to these things, getting to meet some of the loveliest beauty bloggers out there face to face. I can't wait to put faces with the names and blogs that I enjoy so much.

I am hoping to take lots of pics & vids and just annoy you guys with well deserved jealousy on your part by posting them for your (and my) enjoyment! And you *know* that I will be posting in almost real time on my twitter account, if you care to be annoyed by me even quicker. I have a feeling I will get a tad overwhelming - just an fyi and apology up front for that.

I am so excited to be here!

Beauty Brands Tips and Toes Sale

May 11, 2009 1:20 pm · Posted by oldergirlbeauty
I know that several of you don't have a Beauty Brands near you, but for those of you that do, here is a great special for keeping your tips and toes in tip top shape for sandal season (yep, I kinda rolled my eyes at that sentence, too. Ha!) Beauty Brands is a Salon/Spa/Retail Store with everything from skincare, haircare and cosmetics. They also have one of the largest selecions of nail care/polishes around me, at least. They also team up with OPI for exclusive colors every once in a while - this time it's "Berry Extraordinary" - a blue based pink berry that is pretty and bright (I was wearing it last week, as a matter of fact.). So, this special has "Berry Extraordinary" on sale for $4.98 (reg. $8.50), which is very good. But what makes this special so great is the fact that Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat is $4.98 (reg. $9.98) and CND Stickey Base Coat is $.98 (reg. $6.95). These are just crazy cheap for two of the most widely used mani/pedi basics.

You need to get yourself to a local Beauty Brands store and pick these up before July 5th, as they don't sell online. (Or maybe ask someone *ahem* very sweetly, and they might be able to help you out at their local store).

Total Beauty Quiz: "What is Your Ideal Glam Lip Color?"

May 10, 2009 12:01 pm · Posted by oldergirlbeauty
I tend to be more of a lipgloss than a lipstick kind of girl. However, there are times I want to look pulled together a bit more, with a bit more "stay" to my lip color and I need a lipstick. I do tend to pick the same kinds of colors each time, just due to the fact that I get hesitant about picking a color that just won't work. Maybe I put too much thought into it. Ha!

Max Factor and Total Beauty have teamed up with a fun quiz to help me (and you) to find out which lipstick shade matches our personalities. They say:
"Soft on the inside yet bold on the outside, highly pigmented lip colors can speak volumes about your personality -- before you've uttered a word. Find out which shade of the beauty editor- and consumer-favorite MAX Factor Vivid Impact Lipcolor you should be wearing."
After taking the quiz, the color it picked for me wasn't something I would have picked up for myself at first, but I will def take a look at it when I go to the store, as I *do* love a mauve:

Your ideal Vivid Impact Lip Color: Ms. Terious

Some might describe you as demure, but if they really knew you, they'd see the fire within. A die-hard romantic, you prefer to express your emotions through your eyes, and on most occasions, a sultry smokey eye. Keep this mauve-y nude shade, one of 20 highly pigmented colors, on hand for muted (yet soft and kissable) lips.

Go on and take the quiz and let me know what color it says about you. I would love to know if you agree with it, or if it gives you an idea of something new to try.
