The plus-size accessories search

October 27, 2010 9:03 am · Posted by oldergirlbeauty

I don't usually wear accessories for a litany of reasons. Like:

  • I have enough frontage with the "girls" that I don't need any more reason to draw attention to my chest.
  • I have super sensitive ears, so just about any kind of earrings causing them to get infected.
  • I have fat fingers, so it's hard to find rings that fit.
  • I have big wrists, so it's hard to find bracelets that fit.
  • If I find a bracelet that fits, I don't want to wear it because I type to much & it's annoying on the desk.
  • A watch? That's what my cell phone is for. Also: see bracelet issues.
  • I have no reason to wear a hat, so the only chapeau you will find on my head is a ballcap on lazy hair days.
  • Size 11.5W shoes. Really?
  • I drive my mom nuts that I don't change out my purses more often - the one I'm carrying holds everything, why change?

But, besides that, I would wear extra stuff all. the. time. Okay, yeah, not really. But the Fashion Gods are continuing to conspire to get me to change my ways. This past trip to NYC, they brought out the big guns - seriously.

(*Alexis, far left, is most definitely not a girl. *swoon*)

I had the opportunity to attend a tweetup at the DVF "Experience Lounge" where CFDA Executive Director Steven Kolb (*he loves some twitter) moderated a discussion panel that included Harper’s Bazaar Accessories Editor Ana Maria Pimentel, jewelers Alexis Bittar, Dean Harris and Philip Crangi, miliner Albertus Swanepoel and shoemaker Alejandro Ingelmo.

(*look at me listeningly intently - or staring dreamily at the panel eye candy, you decide)

After listening to these heavy hitters discuss how accessories are really a personal thing, in expression and in what grabs you, I was inspired to expand my limited accessories wardrobe when I got home. And this is where I started to get discouraged and would love to get your feedback. Finding plus-size jewelry is hard, and so far I feel that I have been limited to Avenue and I would love some more options - that are *affordable*. I hate feeling like some plus-size products hold my wallet hostage & I give up.

So, can you help a girl who actually WANTS dangly bangles, but is stumped? I would appreciate it!

Catherine's!!!

They have lots of good clearance accessories, and I always get coupons (recently a $15 off a purchase of $20 or more).

Ohh, that's a great idea. I *think* we have one in town, but the clothes were so dowdy I never thought of them for jewelry. Thanks!

I don't know about other accessories, but Simply Whispers has jewelry that's truly non-allergenic. Their prices are reasonable too!

AdornMeJewelry on Etsy. All made with plus size women in mind but can be customized to your specifications. Very reasonable prices and all hand crafted. (Yeah, it's owned by a friend of mine but she really makes nice things).

Um, just because you're plus size doesn't mean you're limited in accessorizing!! The only thing that is limited from what I can tell is your brain... No intention to offend. But if I might say--I am plus sized and love to accessorize--have a drawer full--dresser top full of shit I can't even remember what I have, so don't pull this plus-size crap thinking you can't work it because you CAN work it just like anybody else if not better. You can shop at regular stores!! You don't have to go to only plus size stores to buy accessories. Bracelets with elastic bands that fit all wrist sizes are everywhere--same with rings. Try the shit on while you're standing there--if it doesn't fit move on to the next item. No time for a melt down because a jewelry item doesn't fit!! I have large hands whether I'm at my healthy weight or not.... and shoes... I've been a size 10 shoe since a teenager when I was a size 7/8!! Don't limit yourself girl!!

While I always appreciate comments, it's a shame that some folks don't feel comfortable enough to own their comments by putting their name on it. But, that doesn't mean I won't respond, even with my limited brain.
I can honestly say that I haven't had a meltdown over jewelry, and in fact I *know* I can rock anything that fits. That's the problem. I can not find things that physically fit. Yes, I can find elastic bracelets and rings, I have several. However, they do constrict my fingers and wrists and cut into them very quickly after putting them on. I have put up with this on several occasions, but that doesn't mean I want to continue to do so. Hence the request for additional options of where to get accessories that do NOT do that. I wish that you had shared with me *where* you got all of your volume of accessories so that I could go have a looksee there myself.
As for shoes - I too wore a size 10 when I was a teenager and had a much easier time finding shoes than I do now as an 11.5W. Fact of the market, there is less choices at that size.
Thanks for taking the time to give me your point of view.

I just found your website and like it. As for plus size accessories, here in California (and online) I like Fashion Bug, Lane Bryant, and QVC. QVC on clearance can get you some really nice stuff for very reasonable prices. You have to keep a watch on it, but they carry bracelets and rings in larger sizes (both costume & fine). I have picked up some really cute/nice pieces at all of these. Shoes, I would recommend Nordstroms or Macys clearance online. Also, sometimes Zappos gets really good deals on larger size shoes because like the smallest sizes are the last to go. I understand thought that the 11.5 is harder to come by because some of them only do whole sizes after a size 10. Good luck and I hope this helps you out!

Lane Bryant has some great stuff. It often goes on sale for b1g1 or b1 get one half off. It's even better when everything in the store goes on 40 percent off. I love their rings, necklaces, and they have earrings for sensitive ears

regisbla: Thanks so much for the clearance section tips - i'll def have to dig around and see what I can find.

KCirca: Ohh, I didn't realize LB had such discounted sales. I will def have to start keeping my eyes peeled for those. Hopefully they have a better selection online than they have at my local shops.

Spar: Thanks for the suggestion - I totally don't mind mentioning friends if they've got something good to share. I'll def take a look, as custom wasn't something I had thought about before. Smiling
