Priming the palette

May 3, 2010 9:04 am · Posted by oldergirlbeauty

Up until a couple of years ago, I had no idea what a face primer was, nor what it could do for you when applying makeup. Well, I have come to learn *plenty* about them now & want to make sure that you do, too.

In the video I mention the following primers, and tried to touch on their price points, but I did so with out any notes. I'll list them here, with links for more details on them, and will list their current SRP:

Avon MagiX - $10 (on sale now for $7.95) (*bought this myself)
Tricia Sawyer Skin Balancing Water Primer - $34 (*bought this myself)
Sally Hansen Natural Beauty Luminizing Face Primer - $10 (on sale at CVS for $7.99) (*bought this myself)
Stila Hydrating Primer SPF 15 - $34 (*PR provided)
Cover FX Clear Prep FX - $39 (*PR Provided)
Peter Thomas Roth Un-Wrinkle Primer - $38 (*PR Provided)
Two Faced Shadow Insurance - $17 (*bought this myself)
L'Oreal Double Extend Beauty Tubes Mascara - $10.95 (*bought this myself)
Cover FX Mint Glaze FX Primer - $22 (*PR Provided)

I also mentioned, but didn't show:
L'Oreal Studio Secrets Professional Magic Perfecting Base - $13
Urban Decay Primer Potion - $18

I also wanted to mention one that I had forgotten to show in the video, the Clinique Redness Solutions Daily Protective Base SPF 15. This is a primer that not only sets your skin for your foundation, it does so by correcting the redness in your skin, with a green tint, if that is one of your problems - $17.50 (*PR Provided)

Just so you know, I have only touched on the brands, and availability, of primer products that are out there. I just wanted to at least let you know how much of a variety there is, and how there is definitely one for you and want you need it to, if you decided to start using a primer. Please let me know if you use any of the ones I mentioned or if this compels you to try one - I'd really like to know.

It's not always a powdery world

When I was growing up, the only kind of blush I ever used, or was even introduced to, were powder blushes. I have come to learn that there are so many variations besides powder now, that I want to make sure you know, too.

In this video I mention several different types of blushes/brands. They are:

I forgot to mention a couple of brands/products that def deserved to be shown, too. The first is the Sue Devitt Starbrights Lip & Cheek Gel in "Capella" (*got in a gift bag). This cheek gel scared me when I first saw it becaus it is *purple*. But after the lovely MUA put it on my cheeks and showed me how pretty it could be on my skintone, I was hooked.

The second one that should have been in the video is the Covergirl & Olay Simply Ageless Sculpting Blush. Besides being a creamy blush that goes on easily, it is also the only blush that incorporates Olay's Regenerist Serum into the mix - making it not only pretty, but good for your skin, too. (*of course, I can't help but to mention that I was lucky enough to have celebrity MUA Jake Bailey apply it on me and it looked *good*). (*warning: I may be biased).

Like I said in the video, the colors are going to look more intense in the package, but with a light touch, you make just about any color work for you. Also, don't forget what I said about layering - you can start with an alternate type of blush, finishing off the top with your powder blush for a longer lasting cheek.

Let me know if you have tried any of these, or if you have heard of another blush type that I didn't list here. I would love to hear about it.

Happy Birthday/Blogiversary to ME!

OMG - You Can Win *ALL* of THIS!!!

I love my birthday - like a fish loves water. I used to countdown to my birthday starting 30days prior. I try not to do that outloud any more, as some people seemed to tire of it, like the spoilsports that they are. I also like presents - A LOT. Because I am greedy like that. *shrug* However, this year, in observance of my almost 40th birthday, I have decided to give away a present to one of you - my fun readers. (*except for my fab Int'l readers, of which I know there are many. I'll try and make it up to you in the new year, okay?)

So, I asked some of my favorite brands if they would help me celebrating my birthday, and coincidentally, my 1st Blogiversary and they agreed. Check out what one lucky reader can win:

Talika Beauty of Your Eye Kit ($48)

CoverFX SkinprepFx ($45)

Mario Badescu Drying Lotion ($17)and Super Rich Olive Body Lotion ($10)

Clinique 3-Step Skin Care System (*sans bag) ($50.50), SuperBalm Moisturizing Gloss (14.00), Blushwear Cream Stick ($18.50), High Impact Mascara ($14.00) and Vitamin C Lip Smoothie ($17.50)

Kiss Professional Manicure Kit ($9.99)

Dashing Diva Nail Polishes ($56)

Holy Crap - That's worth more than $300! Do I love me some great brands, or what?

So, because it's *MY* birthday, I get to make the rules, sort of. Enter in the box below, one entry per person, randomly picked winner, etc. HOWEVER, I would also like to know what has been your favorite thing that I have written this past year, because I am all nosy like that. :)

The contest closes at Midnight on the night of the 17th, after I have enjoyed my entire birthday, and I will announce the winner on the 18th. Good luck and thanks for playing in my playground with me. :)

...inside, everybody has a creamy center.

Cream shadows are going to be all the rage come Spring, supposedly, but not just a simple shadow, but a dual-purpose shadow - eyeshadow primer AND shadow in one.

This Spring, Too Faced Cosmetics is coming out with "Two Faced Lock Down Ultimate Creaseless Cream Eye Shadow" (gawd damn that's a hella long name). It is based on their great eye shadow primer, Shadow Insurance. I happen to use this silicon based primer and just love the way it wears on my eyes, even if it makes it a smidge difficult to blend eyeshadows after dry down (but I think we all know that I am blending challenged anyway, so can't really count that off of the Shadow Insurance, now, can we?). Right now I see that it is going to be in 4 neutral colors, one of them called "Bondage". I'm interested in this one because it looks pretty close to my Clinique Quick Eyes Cream Shadow in Lucky Penny that I am almost to the bottom of as we speak/type, which I have used as a primer/base, but with limited success.

Next, we see that Urban Decay is offering up up "Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion in Sin". It's based on their crappily (my opinion) packaged eye shadow primer, Primer Potion. As of right now, the "Sin" (champagne shimmer color) is the only new color coming to the Primer Potion. Again, a very neutral color to use as a base or to be worn by itself. I can't honestly say that I would try this one over the new Two Faced primer eyeshadows, primarily (ha - pun!) due to the packaging. I just know that I would NOT have the patience to saw open the tube, as so many others have done, and would therefore waste half a bottle. But at least the option is out there for the many UDPP devotees.

And this just furthers the TFSI vs UDPP ongoing preference battle. But I know what side of the fence I'm standing.

Just the 10 of us

Okay, really, when did I become the girl with 10 lipglosses/lip balms/lipsticks in her purse? Seriously, this is what I have in my purse RIGHT NOW:

C.O. Bigelow Cinnamint Mentha Lip Shine (Remind me to tell you about going to the original apothecary)
SoftLips Cherry Lip Protectant (mmm...cherry)
Philosophy Green Apple Flavored Lip Shine (OMG, seriously, I eat this stuff off my lips)
Hershey's Almond Lip Balm (I have *such* a soft spot for Almond flavor/scent)
Blistex Lip Infusion Soothing Splash (this is like putting water on your lips)
Clinique Black Honey Almost Lipstick (my first "fancy" (upscale) lipstick)
MAC Petting Pink Tinted Lip Conditioner (my current fave!)
CoverGirl Mauve Shine 490 TruShine LipColor (pretty color - mauve looks good on me)
CoverGirl Petal Shine 425 TruShine LipColor (so light, but goes well over others)
Avon Sparkling Mauve Ultra Color Rich Lipstick (got this after I wanted to try it on - mauve - again)
bareMinerals Brillance Lip Gloss (From the Champagne Diamond collection on QVC)(see?)

Okay, maybe I just don't want to take any of these out, because it seems like they are all mostly different, but still....wow.
