Beauty bloggers helping "Doctors Without Borders"

December 20, 2010 8:52 am · Posted by oldergirlbeauty

This past Friday, the lovely Karla, from KarlaSugar.net, and I were interviewed by the local OKC Fox Affliate, KOKH Fox 25, about Karla's charity brainchild - BeautyBloggers.org

(*You can check out our video HERE. As they uploaded it as a flash file, I can't embed it here.)

Here is the official "About" info on the auction/idea:

BeautyBloggers.org is the collaboration of almost 50 different beauty bloggers and brands. In the spirit of the holidays, we wanted to make a meaningful contribution to charity — knowing that the most effective donation to any charity is cash.

So we’re putting our makeup on the auction block. Winning bids will be donated directly to Doctors Without Borders.

We’re raising money for Doctors Without Borders because women are always disproportionately affected in any disaster. This organization is committed to bringing quality medical care to people in crisis, regardless of race, religion, or political affiliation. They treat rape victims in Papua New Guinea; they make sure women don’t die in childbirth in Pakistan; they helped flood victims in Mexico and earthquake victims in Haiti. They work in 65 countries around the world, and your donation will make an immediate impact. Click here to learn more about MSF

Mally Beauty Rise and Shine collection

I'll just say that I am excited to be a part of this auction & that I was able to be interviewed, along with Karla, to help bring awareness to this great idea. So you know, I donated a Mally Beauty "Rise and Shine 9-piece Long Wear Brightening Collection" that I paid for myself. It's no longer available on QVC, so this would be a great way to get started with Mally products, if I haven't already convinced you before now. ;)

BUT!! *TODAY* is the LAST day of the auction - it ends at *5PM CST*. Now, I know most of you are auction snipers, waiting till the last bit to snatch up that great deal, so this post comes at the right time for you. Get over there and get to bidding! Seriously - you won't believe the hard to find/cult/LE/Europe only pieces that are available in this thing! And, after you win - come back and tell me what you got!! :)

*I also want to make sure you know who else I am lucky enough to be a part of this with, too:

Afrobella, A Girl's Gotta Spa!, AlyWalansky.com, Armani Beauty, Bay Area Style File, Beauté Cosmetics, Beauty Alchemist, The Beauty Look Book, Bobbi Brown, Cafe Makeup, Cargo, China Glaze, EnKore, Estee Lauder, For the Love of Beauty, Givenchy, Gloss Menagerie, Gouldylox Reviews, Grace Gold for AOL StyleList, KarlaSugar, KraseyBeauty, Lancome, Leonor Greyl, The Makeup Girl, Miss Whoever You Are, Musings of a Muse, My Lips But Better, Nadine Jolie, The Non-Blonde, Older Girl Beauty, OPI, Out in a Pout, Pink Sith, Prime Beauty, Product Girl, Pursebuzz, Renee Rouleau, Sasquatch Swatch, Sicka Than Average, Spoiled Pretty, Talika, Three Custom Color Specialists, and Votre Vu

$500!!

Guys, I can't believe it is already that time of year again! Another year of trying out new products, going to fashion shows, trade shows, trying new services, meeting great new people - and sharing it all with you!

As a token of my appreciation for sticking around to read my ramblings, I want to give you guys a chance to win a bunch of goodies. This year I really wanted to make a point and share with you some of my go to faves - from the "cheaper than lunch" treat to the decadent "you spent how much?". Here's what I'm giving away:

  • Eight Body Moisture - Ginger Lime: The fresh scent wakes you up and it feels so good going on. I'm just glad my kid doesn't like lotion, or he would have taken this along with my body wash. ($24/ea)
  • Talika Lash Conditioning Cleanser: Hands down my favorite eye makeup remover. So gentle on the eyes & no weird film left afterwards. I wept when I finished my last bottle. No lie. ($24/ea)
  • Mally Beauty Volumizing Waterproof Mascara: I do not like waterproof mascara, except for this one. Seriously. When I got this one I used it for a couple of months before I even realized it *was* waterproof - it just didn't feel like other wp mascaras out there. And it makes my lashes look good, too! You'll get *2* of these, so you can decide to hoard them for yourself or share one with a friend. ($20/ea)
  • Votre Vu Duette: This combo lotion/lip balm is a multi-taskers dream. I may or may not have had words with a TSA agent at the airport when I forgot to check it, since it is a smidge over 3oz. (*Spoiler: I won!) Also, this scent is heavenly. ($39/ea)
  • Mario Badescu Lip Wax: I recently gave my tube up to my friend who had lips like Lisa Rinna used to have due to an allergic reaction. Her situation was dire. I would only willingly give up my tube in emergencies like that. It's that good. ($5/ea)
  • Mario Badescu Flower and Tonic Mask: Sometimes my face just needs a little TLC, so I'll slather this mask on for a little soothing. However, last time I grabbed it, I realized I hadn't closed it properly and it had dried out. I was so devastated I attempted to revive it with tap water. Don't do that. ($18/ea)
  • Mario Badescu Super Rich Olive Body Lotion: In the winter my legs get really dry and itchy. I squeeze some of this on before bed, rub it all in and the itchiness goes away. Heavy duty, but light moisturize. And it absorbs quickly so my sheets don't get all gross. ($10/ea)
  • CoverFX MintGlaze FX: This lip primer works great on lips, but it does amazing things on mosquito bites, too. Seriously. I don't know how, but when I used this on some nasty bites this summer - *bam* - they went away QUICK. No lie. I'm giving away *2* tubes of this, so that you can use one on your lips and one on your bites, since you really don't wanna mix the two, do you? ($22/ea)
  • Three Custom Color Cream to Powder Blush in "Morning After": I love cream blushes now. And I know some of you are afraid to try them because you might be intimidated. This almost neutral shade is a perfect way to ease into it, esp since it dries down to a powdery finish anyway. ($22.50/ea)
  • Orlane Paris Extreme Anti-Wrinkle Regenerating Night Care: Yep, this is expensive and oh so decadent. It also feels good and works really well at soothing my tired skin by absorbing fast & not sitting on top of my skin like so many night creams do. It makes it feel like my has bounced back overnight when I use it. Of course, it better for the price tag, right? And I'm giving you a jar to see for yourself! ($300/ea)

You all know I am nosy, so, this year's contest question(s) is "Have you bought or tried anything that I have written about? If so, what?". I'm really just curious if anything did so I can know if I am alone in my like for something. Anyway, enter your answer, name and email addy in the widget below, please:

I'll run the contest from now until midnight the night of the 16th and will announce the winner next week on my birthday, the 17th! Good luck!

*Disclaimer: All prizes are being provided by PR on my, and their clients, behalf.

The invisible finish to your face

September 1, 2010 11:13 am · Posted by oldergirlbeauty

Have you guys ever had something that worked so good, but you were all, "I don't know how it does it, it just does"? That's how I feel about "Mally Beauty Poreless Face Defender with Sponge" that I bought from QVC (*on easy-pay - YAY!).

This clear solid is your finishing touch to your makeup, instead of using a (translucent) face powder. You are supposed to use the sponge to pat it out of the package and tap it over your face to set your makeup, just as you would your face powder, only this will not show any visible settling in any of your fine lines and pores. In fact, it is supposed to give your face a matte/soft finish effect - which I think it does, to the point that it almost looks like cameramen think you are Cybil Shepard and are using a soft focus to shoot you (*man, was that not SO distracting on Moonlighting when they did that to her? And wasn't Bruce Willis a handsome devil back then, too - save for that BAD wig they had on him? I digress).

I gotta say, I was facinated by this product, but held off getting it because I just couldn't figure out how it worked. I still don't know exactly, but I do know that this is silcone based, so, if you are sensitive to silcone in your products, this isn't going to work for you. Here's my downside - because it's clear, I don't know exactly how much product I am getting on the sponge, or on my face. You do NOT want to smear the sponge in the pan because you will pull out too much product and waste it, that's for sure. Now, my girl, Gouldylox, uses a flat topped brush to apply this, which I have done a couple of times and works quite well, too. I think this is more of a trial and error, where less is more, even tho it really isn't that noticeable once it's applied any way - even in pictures. (*yes! no more powder flashes where your face is an entirely different color than your neck/chest!).

It looks like right now this is a QVC exclusive, and they have it for $36.48 (plus s/h). Keep an eye out, as Mally is on there quite frequently and you may be able to pick this up on easy-pay like I did.

Have you guys tried any of Mally's products? Or are you as big of a fangirl as I am? I swear, I was stupid giddy when I had a chance to spend time with her behind the scenes of the Marc Bouwer video shoot last year. Besides that, I really like a lot of her products. Win/Win!

In a rush for Mother's Day...

I'm not one you would call "a person who plans ahead". I may have a vague outline of what I want to do, but it never fully comes to fruition until, say....right when it needs to get done? Yeah, so gifting sometimes ends up the same way. Maybe, just maybe you are a little like me, so I thought I would give you some ideas that you can run out and grab and still look like you "planned" that gift to make your Momma feel special. I promise I won't tell her any different.

Oh, and just an FYI, these really are things I'm considering for my momma, based on what she likes. And, yes, I'm willing to pay the expedited shipping charges if I decide on one of the online products. The price of being a procrastinator. *sigh*
