Hair repair at ION Studio in NYC

September 23, 2010 2:42 pm · Posted by oldergirlbeauty

I have long hair. It's the first time in my adult life that I have had it this long. But, while it is long, it has no shape other than "long". (*I'm hesitant to do anything with it, since it's long & i would hate to give it up, so, it's just *there*) So, when I had a chance to have my hair cut by world renowned hairstylist, and ION Studio co-owner,Leonardo Manetti (*who also happens to be a good-looking Italian), I jumped at the chance.

Leo has a great background of how he ended up here in NYC, which includes starting as a wood-sculptor, honing his hair styling skills in Dallas, TX, to styling for fashion magazines worldwide before opening NYC's first green salon with his two friends, (*who have also been featured in worldwide fashion mags & just happen to be good-looking Italians, too), Pasqual Ferrante and Marco Santini (*you may remember me talking about Marco during NYFW last September).

Let's talk about this space for a minute. Besides it being wind-powered with the goal of a 0% carbon footprint, it was also established as a multi-functional location. All of the stations can be pushed back to open up the area for other types of activities like art shows, or even fashion presentations like the Ann Yee Spring/Summer 2011 collection this fashion week. Not only do they keep the surroundings "green", they also use the Davines line of products, which are made with "high-grade, natural ingredients". (*I enjoyed a shampoo & hair masque before my haircut & was lucky enough to get to talk James, who is from Tulsa, OK, while leaned back in one of the custom built "trust fall" chairs by EcoSystems.

Anyway, back to Leo & my hair. After ruling out bangs ("Oh no no no...") and layers, we decided to keep my length, clean up the ends by taking around 1.5" or so off - getting rid of all the dead/splitends - and giving a just a hint of shorter fringe around my face to break it up a bit. I was sincerely amazed at what that change did to my hair. It felt lighter, smoother & looked so much healthier than when I had walked in, that's for sure. I appreciated that he was honest about what would work for me and my face shape & worked with me about keeping my length - I really felt revitalized when I was done.

If environmental beauty is your thing (*and why wouldn't it be?), and you are in NYC, I would definitely recommend you track down this salon for your hair (or even event) needs. And even if you don't have one of the partners work with you, my girl Meredith, from Retrodiva's Beauty can tell you that you can get great work done by one of the other stylists at the salon.

Lemme know - is going green at your salon a high priority to you? Or is it just stylist, or even location, that makes you go where you go?

*Disclaimer: Services were provided by the salon for PR consideration.

It's that time of year again....

September 7, 2010 4:40 pm · Posted by oldergirlbeauty

You guys - it's September *already*. You know what that means? Yes, I know it's almost Fall, but that's not what I'm talking about. It's time for "Mercedes Benz Fashion Week" in New York City! And in September, they show the collections for Spring/Summer wear for next year.

Well, I'm excited to tell you guys that I will be getting to go to NYC this season and bring you all kinds of coverage - everything from backstage, talking to makeup artists and hairstylists; front of house, watching the actual clothing presentations; checking out hair and beauty salons; and even reporting from some of the best parties during the week. Now, not only will I be attending MBFW, I will also be in NYC for "Fashion's Night Out", which is a night to celebrate shopping and fashion. As of right now I think there is something like 950 events lined up in NYC alone! But, it's not just a NYC event - it's global - make sure and look to see if there are any events in your town so you can participate, too. (*You may want to google if your town isn't listed. I know for a fact several Oklahoma City places are doing something, but it's Oklahoma isn't listed on the page. Boo!)

I will be nice and give you guys fair warning - if you are following me on twitter you know that when I travel I tweet *a lot*. Well, considering everything going on this trip, expect my tweeting to be in overdrive. I can't help it - I wanna share what I am doing THAT MINUTE with you guys & that's the best way to do it. So, if you wanna take a break from me for a week, I totally understand. (*Just come back on the 15th). But, if you want to feel like you are there with me, then make sure to follow me and you'll get all the up to the minute stuff that I have going on.

I'm excited to head out there on Thursday & hope you are excited to go with me, too!

*UPDATE* I just wanted to include some links that I found about happenings around Oklahoma City for Fashion's Night Out OKC: The MOOD blog lists several of the participants, here is the Facebook page for the event and here is Alex, from "The Makeup Bar" (*who is primarily spearheading this event) speaking with the Fox 25 Morning Show about FNO. So, all you local OKC folks have no excuse for not getting out there Friday, because you can't say you didn't know what was going on!

Bond No. 9 Fall '10 Releases

July 13, 2010 11:48 pm · Posted by oldergirlbeauty

Bond No. 9's motto is "Making Scents of New York", and boy do they ever. All of their 40+ fragrances are all named after something/someplace in New York.

This fall, they will be adding two new scents to their "neighborhood" of fragrances: "Cooper Square" and "Washington Square".

Top: "Cooper Square", Bottom: "Washington Square"

I don't really have any info on what the scents smell like, or their "notes", but we all know I don't really know much about those anyway, right? So, I'll just say that the bottles look pretty cool - esp the "Washington Square" one with the arch on it.

"Cooper Square" launches September 1st, 2010 and "Washington Square" launches November 1st, 2010 at your local Saks Fifth Avenue Bond counter, any of the 4 NYC retail locations or online. I don't know exact pricing but I am sure it will run along the same lines as the others, between $45 to $300+, depending on size. I know it's not exactly budget, but, Bond's packaging (*and scents, of course) can almost make a collector out of anyone.

What a WEEK...whew!

It's that time of year again - time for The Makeup Show in NYC. It's a trade show of makeup vendors open to the public and pros alike. Last year was my first time to go and I was excited to go again this year.

I have lots of photos, video & info to share with you. However, my kiddo broke his arm, here in Oklahoma, the Saturday night I was in NYC (*I just touched down today and immediately grabbed my liquid love before I even left the airport!). He'll be fine, but he needs doctor visits & surgery on Thursday. So....I might be a bit busy this week before I can give you the full report. Just know, this was another great event that allowed me to talk to so many experts and see so many neat and innovative ideas. I can't wait to tell you all about it.

Victoria's Velvet fragrance

October 13, 2009 3:32 pm · Posted by oldergirlbeauty

Tomorrow there is an event in NYC at the Victoria's Secret, on Lexington, for the launch of VS's new fragrance, "Velvet: The Fragrance".

Now, I don't know anything about this scent, but the thing that caught my eye was the fact that you could get a makeover from the VS Beauty Supermodel Artist team - led by Polly Osmond. You might rememer when I met her backstage at the Christian Siriano Spring/Summer 2010 show. It would be so cool to get a makeover from her, but, unfortch I'm in OKC and won't make it. But, if you are in NYC, head over there between 2-4pm and pick up something from their Parfums Intimes Velvet collection (*required) to get your makeover from Polly.

In addition, the model Alessandra Ambrosio will be there for autographs (*with purchase, too), there will be a "Suprise Guest", cake from Sylvia Weinstock and a chance to get a preview of the Heidi Klum VS Makeup Holiday Collection. So, since I don't get to be there for all of that, you'll have to come tell me all about it. Deal?

Leaving on a jet plane....again

September 9, 2009 6:54 am · Posted by oldergirlbeauty

Well, if you follow me on twitter, then you know all about the drama I had trying to get to NYC yesterday. I am just going to pretend that it wasn't scary and was just a trial run to get ready for today. I'm going to NYC for the Total Beauty Summit and to cover shows at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week.

This opportunity is so amazing to me, and has shown me just how generous people really can be. I continue to be amazed at the kindness I am shown on a daily basis. Bah, enough of the mushy stuff - I'll be all mushy and thankful when I get home and am not cursing them all for me being so exhausted. ;)

So, just like when I went to The Makeup Show earlier this year, I'm going to be blowing up my twitter feed with everything I am doing. So, now is either going to be a really great time to follow me or a really good time to take a break. I'll leave it up to you. ;)

Brows by Elke Von Freudenberg

May 21, 2009 1:24 pm · Posted by oldergirlbeauty
One of the things I def wanted to do in NYC was to go see the fab "Eyebrow Specialist" Elke Von Fruedenberg. I had been trying to coordinate my trips with her bi-coastal schedule and was lucky enough to get an appointment for this trip on Saturday morning. So, before I went, I took a "before" pic of my brows:
Little messy, but I like a fuller brow, so, that's what she got to work with.

And this is how great they looked afterwards: She told me that I had great shape, that my arch was in the right place, but that she wanted to just "sharpen them up a bit". I was all for it and I think the results are great. (*the makeup is after my appt at Saks for the D&G Makeup launch - def more about that later.)

And here I am with the lovely lady herself: She was super generous with her time - even after my epic address FAIL! She does brows a neat way - she put on her super magnifying reader glasses and has you *sit up* in front of her, not laying down. She says this way she sees how your face falls naturally and can better shape your brows to fit your face this way. The didn't use any wax or threading on me. Just pluck plucked me neat with her tweezers. (*Neat tidbit - when I asked her who her most famous person she had met - get this - Oprah! Yep. She was doing the makeup for one of O's friends, and next thing you know O walks in. Crazy world, eh?). I didn't have any leftover redness, like after waxing, so I was able to keep on trucking on with my day.

Oh, in addition to doing brows all over the place, Elke also has a brow product line called Elke: The Brow Collection that has all kinds of brow shadows, brow pencils, and her "Clear Eyebrow Ware", which acts like a brow gel, but without the crunchy/flaking. She also let me in on what she has upcoming - which will be amazing for lovelies trying to grow their brows out - but I won't spill any more than that - I'll let her share when she is ready.

Like I said, she is bi-coastal, but take a look at her calendar and schedule an appointment when she is on your coast. You won't be sorry.

So, what did *you* do this week?

May 21, 2009 9:22 am · Posted by oldergirlbeauty
Hello, Lovelies!

I am back to the usual grind in OKC now, as I have just gotten back from a fabulous trip to this little hidden gem of a town on the east coast, New York City. Maybe you have heard of it?

I'm going to start posting up my adventures, in the chronological order that I did them. (*if you follow my twitter stream you know when/what I was doing, but this will def give more details to that. I'm also going to be posting pics and videos to my Facebook page, that I don't post up here, so take a gander over there, too.

I also want to give a big THANK YOU! and HI! to all the lovely people I had a chance to meet on my trip - it def made it worthwhile.

Broadway bound....or at least that general area

May 15, 2009 10:14 pm · Posted by oldergirlbeauty
Hiya Lovelies!

I may have mentioned this, but I will again, in case you didn't know - I'm going to NYC this weekend. Heck, as I type this, I am enjoying a beautiful NYC night thru the windows. (Making my 2hr delay on the Dallas runway due to "weather conditions at LGA" even more suspect. *sigh*)

Annnnyway - I am so excited to be here and to do all of the great things I have lined up. Like, getting my brows done by Eyebrow Specialist Elke Von Freudenberg, a facial at Mario Badescu, a custom bra fitting by Linda the Bra Lady, attending The Makeup Show and getting my makeup done (and checking out the new dolce & gabbana makeup) by a little known artist named Pat McGrath - I am hoping she does a fine job. ;)

In addition to these things, getting to meet some of the loveliest beauty bloggers out there face to face. I can't wait to put faces with the names and blogs that I enjoy so much.

I am hoping to take lots of pics & vids and just annoy you guys with well deserved jealousy on your part by posting them for your (and my) enjoyment! And you *know* that I will be posting in almost real time on my twitter account, if you care to be annoyed by me even quicker. I have a feeling I will get a tad overwhelming - just an fyi and apology up front for that.

I am so excited to be here!
